Photo by Eric P.We’ve learned a bit more about that huge fight that erupted on the Metro Friday evening. From a report in the Washington Post, it appears the fight indeed started at Gallery Place, and continued on the train as it headed towards L’Enfant Plaza. The brawl then spilled out onto the platform, where Metro Transit Police eventually made arrests.
Stunning is the sheer number of participants in this fight, which some estimates have put at close to 70. It’s unclear how many of those involved were fighting while on the train, or if it escalated further upon arrival at L’Enfant. According to Metro Transit Police, two 16-year-old males have been charged, one with simple assault and the other with disorderly conduct. Angelo Nicolas,18, of the District was also charged with disorderly conduct.
No weapons were recovered at the scene, but police were reviewing videotape of the incident. As of yesterday, three people were still hospitalized.
In response to Friday’s fight, Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells reiterated his support for an earlier curfew for teenagers in the District. Wells told the Post, “curfews do have an impact, especially in that area. I wish I had been able to get enough of my colleagues to vote for it.”
Also, the D.C. Guardian Angels have announced they will be patrolling Green Line trains twice a week, from Fort Totten and Congress Heights between 8 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.
Earlier this summer, a similar fight erupted on a Red Line train between Fort Totten and Union Station. Up to 20 teenagers were said to have been involved in that brawl, which ended when Metro Transit Police and U.S. Capitol Police intervened at Union Station.
