In the former R.L. Christian Library, a pop-up fashion boutique has transformed an unused space into a quirky wi-fi lounge and shop. A project of the Pink Line Project and the District’s Office of Planning, Temporium is part-retail shop, part-party spot — but mostly a unique and interesting use of vacant space.

In an expensive city where retail space is often elusive for fashion upstarts, some of D.C.’s familiar designers have found refuge at Temporium, located along H Street NE in the burgeoning Atlas District. The temporary boutique provides a taste of what it’s like to have a permanent storefront, at least for a little while.

Shoppers at Temporium can find jewelry, t-shirts, menswear, belts and scarves in the brightly painted building. A general checkout counter and a cozy seating area flank the entrance to the space. The building’s various angles make for a challenging setup and overall, the display feels disjointed with wares for sale presented in siloed areas organized by designer. The vivid jewelry and purse designs by Dana Ayanna Greaves are exhibited on an interesting backdrop of woven fire hoses, whereas graphic t-shirts by Jon Wye are set up in a traditional manner with clothing racks and de*nada designs’ knit scarves are tucked away behind a wall adorning clothing racks and dress forms.

More designers have been added through the space’s lifespan, including more jewelry, graphic t-shirts and women’s clothing. For something a little bit different, skate decks and shoes were also included just last week — it will be interesting to see how all the new designers and merchandise will be integrated into the space. Perhaps the influx of more product for sale and display will invite more browsing and sales.

On the weekends, the shop has lured customers with a parade of DJs and events. For Temporium’s final weekend, Hugh & Crye will launch their fall collection at the store, and music will be curated by Bluebrain.

Temporium is open Thursdays and Fridays, 6 to 10 p.m., Saturdays from 2 to 10 p.m. and Sundays from 12 to 5 p.m. through August 15. Check Temporium for a full listing of events. Credit cards and checks only.
