Photo by ianseanlivingston.Good morning, Washington. A man was killed last night in Adams Morgan in a brazen shooting. At approximately 9:11 p.m., a large number of gunshots rang out on Mozart Place NW between Euclid and Fuller Streets, about a half-block off of 16th Street. (From this editor’s vantage point on a rooftop across the street, it sounded like 10-12 shots were fired, though as many as 20 shots have been reported.) Police and EMS responded after a few minutes, and a victim was reportedly tended to with CPR. That man later died. Police immediately locked down the area — several cars along Mozart were struck with bullets. When I left the immediate area, police were still present, and they are still investigating, searching for suspects and a motive.
There could be several long-term repercussions from the shooting. Obviously, the short-term story is that yet another person was shot in a pocket of the city where preventing such violence has proven difficult, despite increased patrol presence and an MPD camera located just down the street. DCist weekend editor Dave Stroup was on the scene and spoke to Ward 1 Council candidate Bryan Weaver — Weaver told Stroup that he feared that the shooting may have had something to do with recent arrests in the area. For more details from the scene, take a read of Dave’s Twitter feed.
Huge Morning Storm Causing Flooding, Outages, Commuting Headaches: An unusually strong morning thunderstorm rocked the District this morning. (Pro: Thanks to the thunder, there really wasn’t any need for an alarm. Con: Waking up to the same amount of light that was out when I went to sleep was slightly unnerving.) As of this posting, Pepco was reporting 97,593 power outages — mostly in Montgomery County — and urging people to stay away from downed power lines, which were causing a large majority of the power problems. Such downed wires on Georgia Avenue, flooding on Rhode Island Avenue and downed trees all over the place were just a few of the issues plaguing commuters this morning. Metro is no better off, as Cleveland Park and Forest Glen have been closed due to flooding and a power outage. There’s also single tracking between Silver Spring and Takoma because of a tree on the tracks. So, basically, the Red Line is a complete mess this morning — avoid it if you can. DCist is also hearing reports of flooding at Foggy Bottom. Metrobuses and the Circulator will also be delayed this morning, as traffic signals are out across town and standing water may cause detours. There are several reports of of flooding in low-lying apartments and basements this morning, too. (No word yet on whether Davy DCist was swept away again.)

This Day In DCist: Last year, only 30 percent of D.C. Democrats found Mayor Fenty favorable; while in 2005, we featured a post about the Nationals mentioning Livan Hernandez. (So much has changed, no?)
