Thursday’s severe thunderstorms left many areas littered with debris, with Ward 4 in the District being one of the hardest hit. According to the District Department of Public Works, crews collected more than 50 tons of storm debris, including downed trees and limbs. Just how much is 50 tons? It sounds like a lot, and thanks to the magical Internet powers of Wolfram|Alpha, we can get some comparisons. Fifty tons is about half the mass of a blue whale, or 60% of a large dinosaur. For a comparison that actually means something, that’s the weight of about 26 average-sized automobiles. DPW crews will continue working through the weekend to clean up what remains of the mess.
