The 42 Bus confirms what we had already read over the weekend on the Adams Morgan listserv — the Blockbuster Video located at 1805 Columbia Road NW will soon be closing its doors. (Now where will people pay extortionate late fees and never be able to find the movie they’re looking for?) Signage announcing the closing went up this weekend, but an exact closing date has proven elusive. When we called the store this morning to get more information, their phone number led to a very loud fax machine line. (My ears are still ringing.)

The news is hardly surprising — Blockbuster’s been hightailing it out of the brick-and-mortar business for some time. The Dupont Circle location left its 17th and P Streets NW branch last fall; D.C.’s last remaining Blockbuster is located at 410 8th Street SE. Standard operating procedure when Blockbusters go down is that the store normally maintains staff until they can recollect rentals and divest inventory, so those of you with things to return or in the market for some cheap DVDs should keep your ears to the ground.

To be honest, though, this kind of feels like writing about about the eight-track or laserdiscs or Pogs. At this point, is there really anyone who would have frequented a Blockbuster store who isn’t already subscribed to Netflix — or even Blockbuster’s own DVD-by-mail service?
