When the debates about whether Restaurant Week is worth it come up, Sushi Taro is usually a standout for the “yes, it’s worth it” side. When a tasting menu would normally run $80 per person (and that doesn’t include drinks or dessert), the $35.10 Restaurant Week price is definitely a deal.
The Restaurant Week menu at Sushi Taro starts off with a three-box tasting (no choices), a second course of warm offerings (choose one of the three options), a third course of sushi (choose one of three choices, plus one of two half-roll choices), and finally, ice cream for dessert (two options). There is also the option to add an additional spicy spider roll for $5 extra and/or a rainbow roll for $9 extra.
The three-box tasting starts the meal off nicely, presenting you with takigawa tofu in the first box, four slices of sashimi in the second, and simmered shrimp and veggies in the third. Surprisingly, it was the takigawa tofu that was the immediate standout. The velvety consistency and creamy flavor were satisfying in both mouthfeel and taste. It was easy to savor each bite and think, “I haven’t even gotten to the fish yet!” The sashimi portion of this course was a prelude to the fresh, high-quality fish that would feature more prominently in the rest of the dishes for the night. The tuna was a vivid purpley-maroon color that seemed to melt in one’s mouth. Even the wasabi that came with the sashimi was impressive. It tasted fresh and strong, zinging the eater with heat and complex flavor. While the shrimp and veggies were less exciting, they were still enjoyable.
