For a while, it seemed that we were telling you about a new food truck every day. But it’s been a few weeks since we’ve been able to tell you about a new one. So imagine our excitement when we learned about DC Empanadas, which will be serving up deep fried empanadas and plans to hit the streets some time in September.
Owner Anna Bran-Leis is originally from Guatemala, and had also visited New York where she tried some empanadas that she loved. When she came back to D.C. and couldn’t find anything similar, she started making empanadas to fill her cravings. “I love to have people over and am the person my family always asks to cook the celebration meals,” Bran-Leis said. After a bit, she began experimenting with different fillings trying to mimic the flavors of other cuisines.
Some of the truck’s empanadas will feature more traditional fillings, such as black beans and rice, jerk chicken, and vegetable curry. But she will also have fancier and more international fillings, like serrano ham and manchego, General Tso’s shrimp, beef wellington, and chicken tikka. She also plans to add seasonal flavors to the menu. In the fall, Bran-Leis plans to use pears, apples, pumpkin, and cranberry in her fillings.
