  • To recap today’s developments from the investigation of Discovery hostage-taker James Jay Lee: Lee was only armed with starter pistols, but the explosives he had in his possession could have been deadly. Police searched Jay’s residence in Wheaton today, and found several more explosive devices, which they safely detonated. Authorities are still searching for a vehicle Lee drove before going to the Discovery building yesterday. Finally, pedestrian access to the streets around the building was reopened around 11 this morning.

  • The Virginia DMV is back online and will extend their hours, remaining open on Sunday and Labor Day to help alleviate the backlog.
  • TBD tries to figure out who “broke” the Discovery gunman story on Twitter — DCist staff photographer James Calder was apparently one of the first.
  • Here comes Earl! You might not be able to go in the water in Ocean City, but those of us who are sticking around this weekend will be sitting mighty pretty.
  • Mr. Megaphone was back outside the Washington Post today, rambling about the editorial board again.
