History buffs should head out of town to visit the Founding Father’s home: George Washington’s Mount Vernon. In the autumn, Mount Vernon is host to a Fall Wine Festival & Sunset Tour (only tickets for October 3rd are still available), as well Fall Harvest Family Days. For a Hollywood hook, Mount Vernon is also offering National Treasure Tours, which does not refer to the estate itself, but rather to the Nicholas Cage movie National Treasure 2, parts of which were filmed at Mount Vernon. Fifty acres of the estate are open to the public, including four gardens, a working farm, and a distillery and a gristmill.

If you’re still jonesing for more history, head over to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, whose distinguished alumni include President Jimmy Carter, Senator John McCain and H. Ross Perot. The town of Annapolis has lots of history and available walking tours include an African-American Heritage tour and a walk highlighting the historic trees of Annapolis. Alternately, head out on Chesapeake Bay, with sailing tours available on a wooden schooner.
