Photo by Marcellina.SHOW: The Palace of Wonders’ Grand Finale Show (the official goodbye before it combines with The Red and the Black Bar to become the Red Palace) marks the end of a great venue, but hopefully the start of an even better one. Tonight, there will be sideshow performances, comedy, fire, belly dancing, and of course, burlesque at 1210 H Street NE. Come out to say farewell to the old, and hello to the new. Doors open at 6 p.m., the show starts at 9 p.m. $10.
THEATER: Bread and Puppet Theater trekked down from their Vermont home to participate in Monday’s mountaintop mining protest. Tonight they perform their Decapitalization Circus in Columbia Heights. The group, known for their larger-than-life paper mache, liberal politics and free rye bread is a must-see. Their touring group of 7 –down from the 50-100 that helped developed the circus — will skewer capitalism with puppets of farm animals, clowns, big flags and Uncle Fatso. “It’s a bunch of unconnected acts under the theme of decapitalization,” explains puppeteer Maryann Colella. “It’s really high energy and fun and satirical and political.” St. Stephen’s Church (1525 Newton Street NW) at 7 p.m. “Doughnations” accepted on a sliding scale.
FOOD & DRINK: Gobble up end of summer flavors at Againn’s (1099 New York Avenue NW) five-course Local Farm Dinner. The menu includes heirloom tomato salad, striped bass, duck, pork and cabbage and ends with “Queen of Puddings.” Each course will be paired with wine from local winery Barboursville Vineyards. Make reservations online. 7 p.m., $55 (plus tax and gratuity).
MUSIC: While Efterklang is the main act, definitely consider coming early to the show at DC9 (1940 9th Street NW) tonight to see the other band taking the stage: Buke and Gass. The duo features a baritone ukulele (buke) and guitar-bass hybrid (gass), which, when combined with vocals, creates a haunting and mesmerizing sound. 8:30 p.m. $12.
>> Swans hit the Black Cat (1811 14th Street NW) with their new album My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky (their first album since 1996). Baby Dee also performs. $20-25, 8:00 p.m.
FITNESS: Revolution Cycles is hosting another Ladies’ Night for female cyclists, this time at their Clarendon location (2731 Wilson Blvd., Arlington). There will be special guests from WABA, FABB, and the police department, as well as information on gear, free food and wine and a free gift for all attendees. 6:30 p.m. Free.
MOVIE: See a screening of Reporting from the Frontlines, a look at “the human side of the continuing conflicts in Gaza, Iraq, and Afghanistan” from Al Jazeera English at Georgetown University’s Gaston Hall (37th and O Streets NW). Following the film will be a discussion with Middle East correspondents Ayman Mohyeldin and Sherine Tadros, as well as former Marine and Al Jazeera English host Josh Rushing. 7 p.m. Free.
HAPPY HOUR: WGIRLS DC, a group that provides underprivileged women and children with support and resources, is holding a happy hour at Iron Horse Tap Room (507 7th Street NW) to benefit Farm to School D.C. A donation of $8 online or $10 at the door gets you domestic beers and entry into a raffle.
>> The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is hosting a happy hour at Lucky Bar (1221 Connecticut Avenue NW) to promote their mission of creating a generation free from HIV. There will be half-priced cheeseburgers, $3 Yeunglings, $3.75 house drinks, and raffle prizes (including one for a $50 gift certificate to Lucky Bar). 6-9 p.m.
