Photo by Bogotron.Good morning, Washington. Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells was reportedly planning on introducing emergency legislation today which would limit access to homeless shelters within the District to families who are residents of D.C. Freeman Klopott reports that the legislation would not apply to single men and women, according to Wells’ chief of staff Charles Allen. Wells was going to introduce the bill because he believes that the city can not handle the burden of housing other jurisdiction’s homeless families under such tight budgetary constraints. Homeless advocates, as you can imagine, were not thrilled about the news; Wells tweeted last night that he’d be willing to hold off on introducing the legislation today to work with those advocates, but that they “must be reasonable.”

No Happy Endings Here: Jason Cherkis has a fantastic piece in the new issue of Mother Jones, in which he reports on the intense hardships of being a gay youth in the District’s foster-care system. It’s an ugly slice of reality — shut door after act of violence after shut door after act of violence after shut door. This section, in particular, just killed me: “You’d think placing Kenneth would be relatively easy. He had decent grades and no criminal record. He spent his weekend nights doing chores, and loved to show off his spotless stove or the 17th redesign of his tiny bedroom. Although he struggled with a mood disorder, he’d learned to keep it in check. But what people saw first were his lipstick, his painted nails—his sexual orientation. ‘I’m just really worried about where we place you,” the judge said at one hearing. “I don’t know that there’s a perfect place.'” Go, read.
