Two Door Cinema Club

Given that they just released their debut album this March, it’s not surprising that Two Door Cinema Club is still intimidated by packed houses. At the Black Cat on Friday night, the Irish band found themselves in front of the first sellout crowd on their North American tour; early on, that was clear.

Tourist History is full of bouncy, hooky tunes that invite you to shut your bedroom door so you can flail your arms and legs like mad, using dance moves that you’d never try in public. The crowd at the Cat was ready to imagine that scenario and dance the hell out of it on Friday night, but had to convince the men of the Cinema Club to do the same. Lead singer Alex Trimble began with a tentative “Cigarettes in the Theater,” carefully checking to see if this night was the real deal. But by the time the band had progressed halfway down the set list to “This is the Life,” they had finally found their stride, feeding off the crowd as they ventured out of the realm of the cautious and bodies flew back and forth across the stage.
