UPDATE (5:42 p.m.): D.C. Fire and EMS spokesperson Pete Piringer just finished an interview on NBC4, and said that the fire has been extinguished and the building evacuated. Piringer also noted that none of the injuries caused by the fire and rescue operation appear serious, but did note that a few firefighters also experienced minor injuries.

UPDATE (5:30 p.m.): D.C. Fire and EMS now report that the fire is a three-alarm blaze and at least two people have been injured, with rescues still underway. Streets around the scene are mostly blocked off, so if you can avoid the area on your commute home, that would be a wise move.

A large fire with bright orange flames has broken out on the top floor of a building reportedly located at 1444 Rhode Island Avenue NW. There are several fire trucks on the scene, and it appears as if the blaze has broken out on the ninth floor. According to Washington Post reporter Jonathan O’Connell, the fire is located inside the Windsor House apartment building. A large crowd has gathered outside of the building to watch the fire.
