THEATER: Beginning tonight, the Capital Fringe Festival presents Fall Fringe, three weeks of performances by former Fringe acts. Tonight, catch Elephant at 6:30 p.m. or McSwiggin’s Pub at 8 p.m. at The Shop at Fort Fringe (607 New York Avenue NW). $20 per ticket/performance, or $50 for four.

MOVIES: The AFI European Union Film Showcase begins tonight with Illegal, the story of a Russian immigrant living illegally in Belgium, at the AFI Silver Theatre (8633 Colesville Road, Silver Spring). 7 p.m. $10.

>> The Alexandria Film Festival actually begins tonight, rather than on Tuesday, as I erroneously noted earlier this week. (Sorry about that.) Catch the free opening night party at the Torpedo Factory (105 N. Union Street, Alexandria) from 6-9 p.m. And watch the first two screenings of the festival: Griefwalker at Convergence (1801 Quaker Lane, Alexandria) at 7:30 p.m. and Ride the Divide at Old Town Theatre (815 1/2 King Street, Alexandria) at 9:30 p.m. Each film is $9.01.

MUSIC: Catch a steal of a show (less than ten bucks!) when the Future Islands take the Black Cat Backstage (1811 14th Street NW) tonight with Lonnie Walker and Romantic States. 9 p.m. $8.

>> Need To Breathe and The Daylights perform at the 9:30 Club (815 V Street NW). 7 p.m. $20.

JAZZ: Brazilian singer Luísa Maita performs two shows at at Bohemian Caverns (2001 11th Street NW) tonight at 8 and 10 p.m. Tickets are $18 in advance, or $22 at the door.

PARTY: Marx Cafe (3203 Mt. Pleasant Street NW) is hosting Pleasant/Swell, a party to raise funds for Bloombars community programs. There will be a DJ playing French electronica and Motown, a white canvas to get creative on and drinks to be had at the bar. 10 p.m.-2 a.m. No cover.

BOOKS: Jim Gorant, Sports Illustrated senior editor and author of The Lost Dogs: Michael Vick’s Dogs and Their Tale of Rescue and Redemption, discusses his book at the Washington Animal Rescue League (71 Oglethorpe Street NW). 7 p.m. Free.
