Photo by DC Metro People. Is everyone ready for another weekend of pure Metro frustration? (After all, it’s been so long since the last one!) Well, get ready: this weekend’s maintenance schedule is pretty wicked. As a reminder, Metro’s online TripPlanner doesn’t feature any of this information, so you should check out this webpage before you head out this weekend.
The big deal: Metro will close five stations on the Orange Line — Minnesota Ave, Deanwood, Cheverly, Landover and New Carrollton — and there will be no Blue Line service between Stadium-Armory and Benning Road starting at 10 p.m. tonight and lasting through closing on Sunday. There will be free shuttle buses operating around the closure, but we all know how reliable those are. (Read: not very.)
As a consequence of the work, times between Orange and Blue Line trains on the sections of track that are operational will be extended. Orange Line trains will operate every 12 to 15 minutes before 9:30 p.m., and every 20 minutes afterwards. Intervals between Blue Line trains are going to be stretched even further — you’re likely looking at waiting 30 minutes between trains all weekend.
Your last chance to grab a train out to any of the closed stations along the Orange Line will depart from Vienna at 8:59 p.m. tonight; to any of the stations on the Blue Line, your last train departs from Franconia-Springfield at 8:47 p.m. — so if you’ve got evening plans but need to get back into Prince George’s County, best keep an eye on the clock tonight.
If you want to read what these closures will actually allow Metro to accomplish, check here. Hey, at least the system will remain open until 3 a.m. on Sunday morning, Daylight Savings be damned.
