>> The Stevens Elementary school, on GW’s campus in Foggy Bottom, is for sale again as the neighborhood rejected the developers plan for a 100-plus unit apartment complex with a restaurant, possibly from Top Chef alum Carla Hall (bummer). The Foggy Bottom Association (that I remember well from my time at GW as an undergrad) prefers the historic school be converted into a hotel. Apparently they’re concerned that the apartment building would just turn into a de-facto dorm for GW. They’re probably right.
>> Speaking of GW, a man was convicted of the murders of two GW students in 1988 in Reston. Alfredo Prieto, already on death row in California, was extradited to Virginia after DNA evidence tied him to the rape and murder of Rachael Raver and the murder of her boyfriend, Warren Fulton. Two juries convicted him and one sentenced him to death. The Supreme Court of Virginia ordered a new sentence because it said a verdict form was unclear. However, this seems inconsequential as he’d already been sentenced to death in California.
>> The Washington Post writes about the area’s migrant fruit pickers and their children’s difficulties with education, in a story that sounds eerily similar to the Grapes of Wrath (if not in plot, in scenery). You’d think things might have changed a bit.
>> Twitter now has an official DC presence, as they have hired their first government liaison. Andrew Sharp, whose official title is Manager, Government and Political Partnerships, will help policymakers, politicians, and government use Twitter in their everyday activities. Lord help him, that will be a challenging task.
