It’s that time of the year: Thanksgiving is over, you’ve likely already started shopping for gifts, time to buy a Christmas tree. After all, the Obamas already received theirs.

Yes, Christmas is less than a month away. Here’s a list of places you can purchase a tree:

>> Farmers markets: those that are still operating likely have trees: they’ve been spotted at the Dupont Farmers Market, Eastern Market, and Arlington’s Farmers Market.

>> Home Depot and the like: most home goods stores will be selling trees.

>> Garden centers: Garden District (where I’ll be picking up my tree), Teresa’s Garden Center (the one on New York Avenue), and Frager’s Hardware will all have trees for sale.

>> Farms: if you want to venture outside the District and buy a tree in a more pastoral environment, here are a few farms that you can go to: Buckland Farm Market in Warrenton, VA, Ticonderoga Farm in Chantilly, VA and Tanner’s Enchanted Forrest in Brandywine, MD.

>> Go cut your own: plenty of people enjoy the prospect of finding a tree and cutting it down themselves (I am not one of them). There are plenty of farms in the area that you can express your inner woodsman or woodswoman. Go to Butler’s Orchard in Germantown, MD, Homestead Farm in Poolesville, MD, or Bramblewood Tree Farm in Orange, VA. Most seem to provide saws but you should double check before you head out.

If you’re committed to buying local, the Virginia Department of of Agriculture and Consumer Services has a website where you can search through tree vendors that sell Virginia-grown trees. So does the Maryland Department of Agriculture.

And as someone who is half Jewish, I’ve searched for places to buy menorahs in the District. Commenters have let me know that besides places like the DCJCC gift shop, art stores and synagogue gift shops often sell menorahs.

Happy tree shopping!
