The name “Shat Shorts” sounds like an indicator of a joke, especially considering that the single they premiered on One Track Mind was called “Liveblogging the Loss of My Virginity.” But Shat Shorts is not so much a joke as it is a good time. The members of Shat Shorts: guitarists Gabe Marquez and Al Charity, singer Andrew Nichols, bassist Anton Krupp and drummer Brandon Korch have been friends and bandmates (in several capacities) over the better part of the last decade. Thus, their screeching, hyperkinetic rhythms sound like the work of seasoned musicians. Marquez’s guitar twists, turns and drops off sharply into a splash of delay as Nichols’ shouts his couplets into the abyss of sound. What could be more fun than that? Answer: songs about zombies. Conveniently, Shat Shorts has one of those, too.
We sat down with Shat Shorts over dinner and drinks in Petworth to talk about their unconventional practicing method, the origins of their band name and the way parts written a capella factored into their songwriting.
