Five. Five whole years. That’s the length of time that Exposed has been running — and we’re pretty darn excited about hitting this milestone.

It’s been an adventure. One which started with the idea that our very talented photographers deserved a show to call their own. That first show — with forty fantastic pictures — at the no-longer-with-us-in-the-same-capacity Warehouse was a tremendous success. Six hundred people showed up to our opening party, and the Warehouse barely withstood the onslaught.

Year after year, the show has grown, adding photographers, photos and more and more space. Civilian Art Projects and Flashpoint saw the show through its next two years, and last year we chose the wonderful (and wonderfully huge) Long View Gallery. We’re happy to report that Long View is once again home to the show, and in 2011, we’re hoping our our fifth splash is our biggest.

Meanwhile, the number of photogs in our Flickr pool has climbed to over 3,300, and a few weeks ago the 100,000th image was added!

There are going to be some changes — change is inevitable. We had around 1,600 people flow through the gallery last year and, while we loved the rush, it wasn’t exactly a dignified way to view the art. This year, we’re still ironing out all the details — but we’re looking to have two opening nights, plus at least one more special event night where we’ll let our hair down, let the beer flow and enjoy some great photography. Photographers and other diehards are welcome to follow us on Twitter for all the updates as we have them.

We’re also going to have a nice retrospective of the works of the last four years, as well as the coming show, but there will be more details on that soon. Look for a post from Heather Goss, who skillfully guided the show through its first four years and is in the process of handing the reins over to Samer Farha and James Calder (Heather, thanks for trusting us!) while she continues to drive new ideas to celebrate D.C.’s seriously talented photographers.

Before we get to those details, though, we need to get to the competition at hand. The search for between forty and fifty outstanding photos to display in our fifth anniversary show is officially underway. The rules, as always, are after the jump — but here’s your deadline: Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at 11:59 p.m.!

So read the rules after the jump, join the group, pick your pictures and get cracking, people. Let’s see your best shots of this wonderful town.
