Hey look, Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn filmed a YouTube video to show us the process by which Metro will test the limits of the Fourth Amendment! Handy, eh? The video includes footage of what random bag inspections inside Metro stations will look like — the whole to-do takes about a minute, though I’d note that the station featured in the tutorial was near-empty. I’d imagine that the process might be somewhat less smooth inside a station crammed to the gills with rush hour commuters already pissed off about having to make a transfer or catch a train before longer headways kick in.

Taborn also notes in the video that WMATA’s decision to institute bag checks isn’t a “reaction to any specific threats towards the Metro system.”

Of course, one only has to look below the video to get a sense of what YouTube commenters think about the searches. The most liked comment on the video so far: “Pretty sure WMATA is more likely to kill me than a terrorist attack anywhere in the system.”
