You’ve probably heard enough about John Wall. He can make a cut as fast as a cheetah. No, really. He’s faster with the ball than Kevin Durant is without the ball. His early season stats before getting injured ranked with the all-time greats. He’s mature beyond his years. He can do one heck of a Dougie.
Add this to the list: Wall’s mere presence gets fans out of their seats, but it’s his infectious emotion that moves them past just being observers of the action and into being a part of the game.
“Put in the ‘Game Changer,'” yelled Miles Rawls, famed heckler of President Obama, from his seat across the court from the Wizards bench midway though the first quarter of a Wizards 104-90 win over the Indiana Pacers last night. This drew chuckles from assistant coach Sam Cassell and Wall himself.
Wall would finish the game playing more minutes off the bench than intended, 35 total, because Kirk Hinrich was limited due to injury and the other point guard on the roster, Lester Hudson, was wrongly chosen to be on the inactive list for the game. Currently not in the starting lineup, the team is trying to nurse Wall slowly back to health. He’s only appeared in 18 games of 30 this season due to a variety of ailments, most recently a knee bone bruise; Wednesday night’s game was his third back after missing the previous five.
