Earlier this afternoon, a suspicious package at a U.S. Post Office at 3300 V Street NE ignited into flames — now there are some additional details on that story. Authorities have admitted that there were two suspicious packages which were discovered at the D.C. post office this afternoon — neither package was opened, but one was thrown into a bin and caught on fire. The packages reportedly resemble the two packages which were addressed to Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley and flared up inside Maryland state buildings yesterday.

According to the Washington Post, the V Street post office handles mail which is sent to federal government entities. NBCWashington.com reports that the two suspicious packages found there today were addressed to Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano. The FBI has arrived on the scene, joining D.C. police, fire and EMS, who have shut down V Street NE between Bladensburg Road and South Dakota Avenue.

Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier just took to the podium outside the post office. Lanier said that an MPD officer was flagged down around 2 p.m. this afternoon by a postal employee who reported the suspicious packages. No injuries have been reported. Lanier refused to answer questions regarding the specifics of the packages, but did call them “similar in nature” to the packages which ignited in Maryland yesterday.

General mail delivery will not be delayed, according to a spokesperson for the U.S. Postal Service.
