Composer Philip GlassThe Christmas decorations have been stored away for another year, and that means that the classical music world is coming back to life and your classical music agenda must rise from its long winter’s nap.
>> This is the week for you Philip Glass fans out there, at least if you are willing to make the trip to Charm City. On Wednesday (January 12, 8 p.m.), the contemporary music series Mobtown Modern presents the Baltimore-born composer’s pop music-oriented Glassworks at Baltimore’s The Windup Space.
>> This is in conjunction with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s debut of a new Glass work, Icarus: At the Edge of Time, on Friday and Sunday (January 14 and 16) at Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. If you cannot face the drive to Baltimore, they will perform the program on Saturday (January 15, 8 p.m.) in the Music Center at Strathmore.
>> The National Symphony Orchestra‘s program this week (January 13-15) also looks very good, with guest conductor Kirill Karabits and violinist Sergey Khachatryan performing music by Shostakovich, Silvestrov and Sibelius at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall.
>> On Saturday night (January 15, 7:30 p.m.) tenor Robin Tritschler and pianist Graham Johnson will perform Schubert’s song cycle Die Schöne Müllerin, presented by Vocal Arts D.C. in the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater.
