They aren’t yet operating along H Street or Benning Road, but D.C.’s streetcars are tweeting. The District Department of Transportation recently launched a new website and a Twitter account for the District’s highly-anticipated streetcar lines.
The website serves as a handy, one-stop shop for basic information about the streetcars and their development. There’s an executive summary of the history behind the development, updates on construction and details on the streetcar vehicles. But perhaps the most useful section of the website is the section on planning. Find yourself confused about the differences between the Anacostia Initial Line Segment and the Benning Road Extension? That confusion should be alleviated — each portion of the streetcar plan has its own webpage, featuring general outlines of the work, contact information for DDOT officials, maps, timelines and relevant online materials. It serves as a nice reference while reading things about, say, meetings on the progress of the Anacostia line.
As far as the Twitter account goes, well, we’d imagine that will really be useful once the streetcars get moving and real-time updates are needed. But that’s not stopping DDOT from getting things moving with a few blasts about upcoming public meetings and the like.
