Photo by davebushe.Good morning, Washington, and a happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day to you all. In case you’re looking for a way to give back on this national day of service, here are a few last minute options — but several of them start soon, so you better get moving. Due to the federal holiday, some transit schedules are different, all D.C. trash and recycling pickups have been pushed back until tomorrow and enforcement of expired meters, booting, towing, residential parking and rush hour lane restrictions is lifted today. Of course, there’s no better day to read and revisit King’s iconic “I Have A Dream” speech, which he made on August 28, 1963 — WAMU speaks with local residents who were present as King delivered of the speech that day.
Identity Of Man Found Dead At Farragut North Still Unknown: There still isn’t much known about the man who was found dead on the tracks at the Farragut North Metro station on Saturday. Briefly Noted: Don’t worry, I wasn’t invited to the secret Dismemberment Plan show at Galaxy Hut either…Death of William Lockridge means unprecedented three special elections on April 26…Four arrested after five stabbed at Rockville sports complex…R. Sargent Shiver hospitalized in Bethesda…Man killed after being hit by two cars in Adelphi…Child pornography cases up drastically in Virginia…Maryland Senate President to push for reinstatement of death penalty…Yes, this is the wrong way to dispose of your Christmas tree.
This Day in DCist: Last year, President Obama made an appearance at a Washington-area church (as he did again yesterday); in 2009, pedicabs and Shepard Fairey were in, kayaking to the Obama Inauguration was out.
