Good morning, Washington. And smile! Your mug could soon be caught by a lot more cameras, according to a proposal by the D.C.’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency to fold nearly 4,500 additional cameras into its network of feeds. According to the Examiner’s Freeman Klopott, the agency would like to start monitoring streaming video from Metro stations and even private businesses, in addition to the Department of Transportation, Housing Authority and school cameras they already watch around the clock. Quote of the report from law professor Jeffrey Rosen: “The D.C. effort to link public and private watching capabilities might be viewed as excessive.” (Uh, thanks for the insight, professor.) Councilmember Phil Mendelson (D-At-Large), who has oversight over HSEMA, also has reservations about the idea of adding more cameras, noting that “there’s no evidence they reduce crime,” and the cost of hiring more people to watch the additional cameras would “not be a good use of resources.”

Klein Rules Out Council Run: After two Ward 1-based candidates, Bryan Weaver and Patrick Mara, declared their candidacy for the At-Large D.C. Council seat yesterday morning, it was only appropriate that another prominent potential candidate from Ward 1 would make up his mind. But former Department of Transportation director Gabe Klein, unlike Weaver and Mara, decided against entering the contest. Klein made the announcement on his personal blog, stating that he sees himself as “more of a CEO/Entrepreneur than a legislator.” Klein didn’t make any endorsements, but did say he thought that the “good” candidates are “pretty easy to spot if you look hard enough.” To make Klein’s suggestion a little bit easier, here’s a list of the 17 candidates who are running for the seat.

Man Killed In Truxton Circle: A man was shot and killed near the intersection of North Capitol Street and Florida Avenue NW around 11:10 p.m. last night. Police responded to the intersection after a report of gunshots, and found a man suffering from wounds. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died. Police are unsure of motive, but the assailant was reportedly riding a bike.
