Photo by AWard Tour.Good morning, Washington. Or alternatively: here’s hoping you’re surviving your Monday morning commute, Washington. Metro? Forget about it: there are residual delays on four of the system’s five lines, due to cracked rails on the Blue and Red Lines, disabled trains on the Red, Blue and Orange Lines, and a switch malfunction on the Green Line — we’re hearing reports of it taking 30 minutes for passengers to go one stop in some cases. Driving? Things aren’t any better on that front either, as a broken 54-inch water main has shut down the Inner Loop of the Beltway near Capitol Heights and other major roads are experiencing a miserable melange of traffic issues. Those taking commuter rail weren’t spared either — they had to deal with trains full of people heading to the March for Life rally on the Mall this morning — an event which will slow buses around D.C., as well. Did I mention that it’s also really cold out there?
Two Found Shot To Death In Lamond Riggs: Police are searching for clues after two men were found dead inside a car last night on the 100 block of Peabody Street NE. Police found the pair around 7 p.m. The Post speaks with neighbors who say they heard several gunshots in quick succession and that it appeared the two men were driving when they were killed. Police have not released a motive or a description of suspects, but did note that they are searching for a black Toyota Scion which reportedly was heading towards Maryland after the incident.
HPV Vaccine: Yup, Still Controversial: Remember all the hubbub over mandatory vaccines for the Human Papillomavirus species associated with higher risks of cervical cancer? Turns out that the District’s requirement for sixth-grade girls entering D.C. public schools to get such a vaccination hasn’t been able to overcome such objections: WAMU reports that only eight percent of sixth and seventh-grade girls in DCPS schools had received the vaccine. The Virginia House of Delegates recently passed legislation overturning a HPV vaccine requirement in that state.
Briefly Noted: D.C. Council to consider bill banning employer credit checks…George Allen to officially announce run for Va. Senate today…New Tenley library opens today…Mineral oil leaks from Pepco facility in Alexandria, some drifts into the Potomac River…So much to like in this story about the library at Ballou Senior High School and the educator who is determined to improve it.
This Day in DCist: Last year, a new member of the Metro board presented modest goals, like getting people to work “on time [and] fundamentally alive,” and we took a look at the new Capital City Diner.
