Photo by philliefan99.Good morning, Washington. Thundersnow was intense enough. But powersnow? That’s what ABC7 meteorologist Steve Rudin is calling the weather system which is barreling through the midwest United States. The District isn’t expected to see much, if any, of that storm; instead, we’ll be getting a steady diet of plain old sleet and freezing rain for the next three days. Davy DCist is crushed, guys.
Pepco Doesn’t Meet Sunday Night Restoration Goal: Four-plus days and counting — that’s how long some Pepco customers, most in Montgomery County, have been without power after Wednesday’s big snowstorm. (We’re guessing these folks aren’t crushed about the lack of powersnow in the forecast.) Pepco had set a goal of restoring complete power to its customers by 11 p.m. last night, but will have to continue to work this week. Both Dominion and BG&E both told the Post that they had restored all households affected by the storm. With one customer in the report comparing the situation to living in Baghdad and Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley publicly calling out the utility, we have to wonder: how much more inclement weather will it take until Pepco wrests away the title of most-hated local institution from WMATA?
Highlight of the Season, I Guess: Washington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall was named MVP of yesterday’s Pro Bowl. Question: if you’re named the most valuable player of a game that no one cares about, does it really count for anything?
Briefly Noted: January 26 storm sets records at local airports…Virgin Hotels looking at potential D.C. properties…Lane of Connecticut Avenue NW closed due to “large pothole”…Alexandria considering legalizing public breastfeeding…WaPo editorial board to Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas, Jr.: “Let the sunshine in.”…A nice little profile of Irving “Duke” Johnson, who operates Duke’s Shoe Repair inside a corner space at the Reeves Center.
This Day in DCist: Last year, Miss Arlington was named Miss America, and the President took in a Georgetown-Duke game at the Verizon Center; today’s also been a popular day for DCist to interview female musicians, like Lykke Li and Aimee Mann.
