As we turn the calendar over to February, some people are beginning to get excited about the arrival of spring training in but a couple of weeks. But here at DCist, we know that the baseball season — and warmer temperatures, of course — is really creeping up on us when we get an email telling us that the Nationals are holding auditions for the Racing Presidents. And that day, my friends, was today.

The Nationals are now accepting applications for those who want to run around the park in a huge Presidential head this year. Auditions for the slots — always a slapsticky good time — will take place on Presidents Day weekend. So what are the demanding qualifications for this position?

  • Measure between 5’7” and 6’6” in height
  • Ability to run from center field to home plate in 40 seconds (approx. 200 yards)
  • Ability to wear a costume weighing approx. 45 lbs for several hours
  • Available for at least 35 Nationals home games

Well, that’s not too bad. The deadline for applications is Friday, February 11; the Nats will perform callbacks — in which applicants will need to answer “six mascot-related questions” — then, after another round of cuts, those selected to audition on February 19 will need to prepare to perform a freestyle dance, complete an interview, run a 40-yard dash and try not to fall on their face during two test Presidents Races.

Want to give it a shot? Well, first read these accounts by those who’ve been through the process before — if it still sounds like a good idea to you, send a cover letter, resume and photo to this email.
