Good morning, Washington. For you demography dorks, today’s a good day — yesterday, the U.S. Census published detailed information on change and growth in various states, including Virginia. According to the Post article on the Census findings on the Old Dominion, population growth in Virginia over the last decade has largely been driven by Hispanics and Asians, the former increasing to eight percent of the commonwealth’s population, while the latter grew by 68 percent. And yes, a huge chunk of Virginia’s growth came in Fairfax, Prince William and Loudoun counties — 40 percent, all told. While all of this is surely interesting, it won’t be nearly as interesting as the redistricting battle that will kick off in Richmond soon.

D.C. Family Shelter More Carefully Screening Applicants: Local homeless shelters in the District are more carefully screening families in hopes of avoiding some of the overcrowding that occurred last year, writes the Post. Families that are not given one of the 145 spots at a family shelter located at the old D.C. General Hospital in Southeast are being put up in local hotels at the city’s expense. During hypothermia season, which runs through March 31, the city is obligated to provide shelter for individuals and families that don’t otherwise have any. The D.C. General shelter has been at capacity since December 21.

MoCo Wants to Regulate Roadside Solicitors: The people who ask for spare change or charitable donations at Montgomery County intersections may not be around for long, it seems. The Examiner reports that MoCo County officials are asking Maryland to ban soliciting without a permit on local road medians, arguing that it’s a threat to both public safety and quality of life. Currently, Maryland law bans solicitors from leaving the medians, but the ban is difficult to enforce. Seven Maryland counties have bans in place, while two others allowing solicitation with permits.

Briefly Noted: Gruesome details emerge in killing of Latisha Frazier; five people currently in custody for the murder … Death of Smithsonian archivist on Metro tracks found to be an accident … Maryland bridges and tunnels may see toll increasesThis sounds…fun? … Amtrak hates freedom.

This Day in DCist: On this day in 2009, the fate of the Apple store in Georgetown was still up in the air and the National Zoo welcomed a baby gorilla girl. In 2008, we found the coolest coffee table ever.
