One of Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell’s flagship plans to privatize state liquor stores has been put to sleep in a key Senate committee Friday. In a strictly procedural move, the Democrat-controlled Rehabilitation and Social Services committee declined to consider a bill, backed by McDonnell, until the Republican-controlled House proceeded with a similar proposal. That is, if they’re not busy catching up on their DVRs.

One would think that McDonnell could easily make headway in the House to move his plans through. But despite making his proposal a highlight of his campaign and first year in office, little progress has been made. Instead, Virginia legislators may be spending a bit too much time watching Netflix and tossing out Groundhog Day and Monty Python quotes like cheap candy.

Although the coffin is nailed and buried, McDonnell still hopes to push for a revived, zombified and decrepit version of it for the remainder of his term — most likely a further scaled back incarnation.
