Dave 1 of Chromeo performs at the 9:30 Club on Saturday night.

On Saturday night, Chromeo took to the stage at the 9:30 Club with a heavy dose of humor. One of the best parts of the electrofunk duo’s live appearances is that they embrace the schtick that has brought them recognition: blinding strobe flashes, hyper-sexuality and the playful lyrical back-and-forth between David “Dave 1” Macklovitch and Patrick “P-Thugg” Gemayel that makes them endearing. They never bantered or took a break — this would have ruined the flow of a seamless onslaught of synthesized sound. The keyboards and Auto-Tune, paired with classic electric guitar and female backing vocals, made for a throwback kind of sound that borrows from a spectrum that includes Detroit motown, Prince’s “Minneapolis sound,” and French electropop.
