Photo by philliefan99.Good morning, Washington. So what’s the chatter at your water cooler / coffeemaker / what have you this morning? Is it the Packers’ big win over the Steelers? The less-than-stellar commercials? The fact that Christina Aguilera couldn’t remember the words to the National Anthem? How terrible the Black Eyed Peas’ halftime show was? Lil’ Wayne’s live-blogging for the Wall Street Journal? How crazy it is that there were people who paid $600 to sit on folding chairs inside the stadium — and then couldn’t get in after a fire marshal deemed the seating unsafe? Then again, perhaps you’re spending your morning coffee break crafting one-liners about AOL’s $315 million acquisition of The Huffington Post. (I personally can’t wait to get a CD in the mail for 1,000 free hours of slideshows!)
Hit and Run Injures Three In Northeast: Police usually bump up traffic enforcement during the time after the Super Bowl, but it couldn’t prevent an accident at the intersection of Rhode Island Avenue and Eastern Avenue NE last night. D.C. police are investigating a hit-and-run incident along the eastern border of the District early this morning, in which one car struck another head-on at high speed, pushing the second vehicle into a third. The driver of the first car then drove away into Prince George’s County. One of the women involved in the crash does have life-threatening injuries.
Former Stein Club President Dies: Jeff Coudriet, who was a jack of all trades when it came to the District government, died on Sunday after battling from lung cancer for the last year. Coudriet, who most recently worked as a clerk in the office of Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans, was 48. Coudriet also had stints at the D.C. Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration, and as the president of both the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club and the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance. Our thoughts are with Coudriet’s family and friends.
Briefly Noted: Dead body found on National Park Service property near the Branch Avenue Metro station…Tanker accidentally leaks load of diesel fuel on Pennsylvania Avenue near White House, cleanup underway…Domestic violence up in Arlington…On Super Bowl Sunday, it was Pour House (Steelers) vs. Hawk ‘n’ Dove (Packers).
This Day in DCist: Last year, we were still dizzy after getting crushed by a massive snowstorm — but that didn’t stop the Washington Teachers Union from taking credit for D.C. schools closing or prevent Washington from having fun.
