Just a friendly reminder that tickets for D.C.’s premier beer event SAVOR go on sale to the public tomorrow at noon. Last year’s Brewer’s Association gala sold out in under an hour, so a second day has been added to quench our craft beer thirst. Tickets to the June 3-4 event are $110, but that gets you access to unlimited tastings of some of the country’s best beers. Odell, Deschutes and Lost Abbey are just some of the breweries that will be serving up some of their finest that we simply can’t get much of in this area. Along with the beers, a pairing of food will be served with each offering to create a wonderful culinary experience. Examples of pairings include:
- Alaskan’s Amber Ale with Asian BBQ (Wild) Salmon With Sesame Slaw
- Dogfish’s Bitches Brew with Spicy Jerk Chicken With Cheesy Grits
- SweetWater’s Belgian Quad with Oatmeal Stout Chocolate Truffles
There are also a number of educational and private tasting salons available for an additional $30. These salons are often led by the brewers themselves and offer an intimate environment to talk beer with some of the greats in the industry. And for the foodies out there, Chef Bryan Voltaggio is doing a salon with Flying Dog and Charlie Papazian, president of the Brewers Association and founder of the American Homebrewers Association, will be doing a salon focused on umami. Be forewarned: these salons sell out quick.
And to those who don’t feel like dishing out the money, there are events all throughout the week leading up to SAVOR and many of these beer celebrities are hanging out your favorite beer bars. Last year I was walking down H Street to meet up with a BeerAdvocate group and I get a big ol’ arm around me — it was Sam Calgione of Dogfish. (I’m no rock star, I swear. I have no idea how he remembers so many of the people he meets.) Calgione was with Rob Tod of Allagash…so keep your eyes open come June, even if you aren’t going to the festival.
