Don’t forget: Metro will be closing five Orange Line stations and cutting off Blue Line service between Stadium-Armory and Benning Road beginning at 10 p.m. tonight. If you usually take either line to get between the District and Prince George’s County, be sure to head out early tonight — if you don’t, you’ll probably be stuck waiting for a Metro shuttle bus to come around.
The basics: beginning tonight at 10 p.m. and lasting until closing on Sunday, the Minnesota Avenue, Deanwood, Cheverly, Landover and New Carrollton will all be closed. During that time, the Stadium-Armory and Benning Road stations will remain open — but Blue Line trains will be terminating service at both stations. While the service shutdown is in place, Metro workers will be working on several maintenance projects, including repairs on the aerial structure outside the Cheverly station, train control upgrades outside the Stadium-Armory Metrorail station, and the installation of 6,000 feet of cellular communication cables, 2,000 feet of track, 380 insulators, 1,400 rail ties and 400 track fasteners. The work is part of the fulfillment of recommendations made by the National Transportation Safety Board.
While the Orange Line stations will be closing their gates at 10 tonight, the last train serving those stations will make its way through a little bit before 10 — so be sure to give yourself some headway before heading out tonight.
As for those shuttle buses, Metro is at least promising an “express option” between Stadium-Armory and New Carrollton. All the fascinating details on that — and everything else you’d possibly need to know how this weekend’s delays will affect your travel plans — is available at Metro’s website.
