630 WMAL personality Fred Grandy, host of “The Gandy Group,” has resigned under alleged pressure from the D.C. station’s management over comments criticizing radical Islamicism. The comments came during a segment on last Friday’s show with Catherine Mann-Grandy, Grandy’s wife and frequent guest, on domestic terrorism and radical Muslims. According to Mann-Grandy, management warned Grandy to tone down the anti-Islamic commentary and that Mann-Grandy would no longer be allowed on air. In response Grandy resigned. Rumors have also circulated that the Council on American Islamic Relations pressured the station to take action on the two. Of course, CAIR spokesmen have denied those claims, blaming “extreme anti-Muslim blogosphere.”
WMAL released a statement today, asserting that the station did not terminate Grandy’s tenure:
WMAL did not terminate Fred Grandy’s employment, and never had any intention to do so. Fred informed us on March 2 of his intention to resign from the station. To be clear, at no time has WMAL told Fred that he was not allowed to discuss his views on Islam over the air. In fact, he has done so on numerous occasions. Further, WMAL has not been contacted by any organization seeking to restrict his broadcasts.
The Washington Post reports that Grandy’s ratings have fallen behind the station’s other hosts and the two entities have since been at loggerheads over a solution.
