  • Here’s Mayor Vince Gray, asked to summarize the psyche of the District: “All we can do is prepare for the worst and hope for the best.”
  • That wasn’t all Gray was saying: the Mayor reportedly told a luncheon crowd at the Metropolitan Club this afternoon that he’s selected Kaya Henderson as permanent schools chancellor. Gray wouldn’t confirm anything after the event let out, though.
  • Greater Greater Washington obtains an email which indicates one of the highest priorities of the Mayor’s office: getting Gray’s name on all agency signage as soon as possible.
  • The Washington Times digs up a 2008 report by Metro’s inspector general which showed that communication about safety concerns in the agency was inadequate.
  • Congrats to DeMatha’s boys and St. John’s girls for winning the city high school basketball championship.
  • A woman is suing Metro for $500,000 in damages — Juana Maria Foster, 52, claims that an elevator she was riding at the Forest Glen station dropped suddenly and caused her to injure her knee and back.
  • A man who had been mugging people on H Street at knifepoint has been arrested.
  • The Examiner reports that child pornography cases have increased drastically in the District and nationwide over the last decade, thanks in part to the online market and increased efforts to prosecute those involved in the trade.
  • The Post’s editorial board gives the thumbs up to Metro’s bag checks; Dave Jamieson responds: “I’ve been covering Metro for six months, and I talk to riders all the time. In all these conversations I don’t think a single customer has brought up the frightening prospect of a terrorist attack on Metro. What do riders actually worry about? Being violently robbed, or getting randomly attacked by kids with nothing better to do. And every minute a transit cop is standing beside a TSA agent at the screening table is a minute he or she isn’t patrolling a station or a train car.”
  • New Columbia Heights notices a hostel at 1422 Harvard Street NW.
  • Sulaimon Brown, media critic: “TBD has been the worst reporting … I’ve had several people calling me already saying TBD is like a tabloid newspaper.”
  • Dr. JoGayle Howard, a veterinarian who was part of the Zoo’s reproductive sciences team when our beloved Butterstick was conceived, died last weekend.
  • Yeah, yeah, D.C. traffic is terrible. In other news, welcome to Washington, cyclists!
  • And with that, I’m outta here for the week — my more-than-capable associates Heather Goss and Eddie Kim will be steering this ship while I’m away, so please provide them your undivided attention. See you Monday!
