Do you know what the term “Browncoats” refers to? Does the phrase “The Hammer Is My Penis” knowingly make you crack up? Acronym-wise, does NPH just roll off the tongue?

If your answer to any or all these questions is yes, congratulations: you are the target audience of Landless Theatre Co.’s production of Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog, the live theater version…of a web series…brought to you by cult favorite television and film writer Joss Whedon…of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” fame.

If that’s one (or three) too many qualifiers, Dr. Horrible may not be for you. But for the rest of us, Landless provides a silly, infectious night of laughs and inside jokes, all surrounding the titular would-be super villian (Charles Johnson), his heroic nemesis Captain Hammer (Clay Comer) and the do-gooder chick Penny they’re both fighting over (Stefanie Garcia).

The original Dr. Horrible series consisted of just three 15-minute episodes, forcing Landless director Andrew Lloyd Baughman to stretch things a little. For additional source material, he turns to Commentary! The Musical, the commentary track that accompanies the DVD release of Dr. Horrible. As a result, things have the potential to get annoyingly meta pretty quickly, but the additional songs end up providing some big laughs, whether it be musical director Mickey Daguiso’s lament on the lack of Asians in the movies or Baughman’s own appearance as rapping co-author Zach Whedon, citing his total lack of interest in writing musical theatre.
