Photo by juliacsmith.Politics and Prose, the much-loved D.C. bookstore which has continued to prosper while other area bookstores have gone under, will soon have new owners. According to the Washington Post, former Post reporters Bradley Graham and his wife Lissa Muscatine will purchase the store, which has been on sale since last June.
The sale of Politics and Prose was temporarily put on hold — and also took on additional weight — in the months after Carla Cohen, who founded the store in 1984 along with Barbara Meade, died in October. Cohen’s husband David and Meade selected Graham and Muscatine from a large group of interested parties, and the new owners will close on the store in 45 days, according to the Post’s report.
“Graham and Muscatine have the passion and wisdom to further strengthen Politics and Prose as a community institution that disseminates ideas and stands as a respected and revered public space,” read a statement made by Meade and Cohen regarding their decision.
There certainly something reassuring in knowing that the store will be helmed by not only an author (of note, Graham has written a political biography of former U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld), but a pair of former journalists, who will no doubt continue Cohen and Meade’s tradition of hosting the world’s finest reporters inside the space.
