Are you in possession of tickets for Thursday’s Opening Day at Nationals Park and holding out hope that you’d get a chance to see President Barack Obama toss out the first pitch like he did last year? Well, you’ll have to settle for simply enjoying some baseball during the middle of the day and a free cap — Obama won’t be uncorking his lefty curve this year like he did in 2010.
NBCWashington.com reports that the Nationals will conduct an opening ceremony similar to 2009’s, during which the team will host flag officers from all five branches of the U.S. military to launch the first pitch to Nationals players Adam LaRoche, Jayson Werth, Ryan Zimmerman, Danny Espinosa and Ian Desmond. Pregame ceremonies will also include a moment of silence for Japan, a flyover and Mayor Vincent Gray delivering the ceremonial “play ball.”
The plus side: without Obama in attendance, security should be somewhat less intrusive — though fans in the know might miss pointing out the snipers positioned on top of the press box to unassuming fans. Tickets to the game are sold out, but, as usual, the team will offer up 400 $5 tickets at the main box office starting at 10:35 a.m. — though the line for those will certainly start forming earlier than that. Gates for the 1:05 p.m. game will open at 10:30 a.m.
