COMEDY: A dozen journalists compete in Commedia dell Media at the National Press Club (529 14th Street NW, 13th Floor) for the title of “DC’s Funniest Journalist”. Stepping up to the mic will be Meredith Shiner (Politico), Nadia Bilbassy (Middle East Broadcasting Company), Matt Cooper (National Journal), Brooke Hatfield (Washington City Paper), John Kelly (The Washington Post), Riz Khan (al-Jazeera English), Scott Lanman (Bloomberg), Lizzie O’Leary (BloombergTV), Mike Walter (Walter Media), Shaun Waterman (The Washington Times), and freelancers Tim Young and Jamila Bey. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets: $15 in advance, $20 at the door. A $35 VIP ticket includes 1 hour of pre-show open bar and hors d’ouevres.
SATURDAY
FESTIVAL: The National Cherry Blossom Festival Family Fun Day at Yards Park (10 Water Street SE, between 3rd and 4th Streets) will have crafts (like lantern and boat-making) for the kids, sake tasting and a Japanese beer garden for the adults, and sushi, Trapeze School demonstrations (1:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m.) and Martial Art performances (12:30 p.m. and 1:45 p.m.) for everyone. 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Free.
>> If you’re up in Maryland, check out the Big Cherry Block Party in Downtown Silver Spring (916 Ellsworth Drive, Silver Spring) for music and dance performances, arts and crafts, karaoke, food and more. 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Free.
>> The Southwest Waterfront Fireworks Festival (600-900 Water Street SW) this Saturday is a day of activities, food (including a bunch of food trucks), music (U.S. Navy and Army bands, drum corps, The Clarence Turner Blues Band, Nen Daiko Japanese Taiko Drummers and more), and, of course, fireworks. Begins at 1 p.m., fireworks go off at 8:30 p.m. Free.
FUNDRAISER: Help earthquake victims while you satisfy your sweet tooth at the National Bake Sale for Japan at Busboys and Poets (1025 5th Street NW). If you’d like to help out, you can contribute baked goods (from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.) or sign up to volunteer (email dcbakesale4japan@gmail.com). BIKES: The Pedal Pushers Club is holding a Bike Swap in the North Hall of Eastern Market (7th Street and North Carolina Avenue SE). There will be bikes for sale, parts to swap, cycling clothes to check out and bicycle groups to meet. 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Free.
FITNESS: The National Park Service Cherry Chit-Chat Run (going on this Saturday and April 9th), is a 3.5-mile jog led by an NPS ranger who will impart cherry blossom history as you make your way around the National Mall. Meet up at the Washington Monument inside the circle of flags to start the hour run. 8 a.m. Free.
>> Lululemon presents Cherry Blossom Yoga with instructor Faith Hunter on the Sylvan Theater lawn (northwest corner of 15th Street and Independence Avenue NW). Remember to bring your own mat! The event is dedicated to Jayna Murray, who was tragically murdered earlier this month. 10:30-11:30 a.m. Free.
SHOPPING: One person’s trash is another’s treasure at the Columbia Heights Community Yard Sale & Spring Clean event.
