Friday is Earth Day – and while you may already have plans to go plant a tree, you may want to consider these other (free) food, drink and event options.

Food & Drink

COFFEE: Bring in a reusable cup or mug to a Starbucks near you on Friday and they’ll fill it up with free coffee or tea. Even if Starbucks isn’t your favorite coffeeshop, everything tastes a little better when it’s free…right?

MILKSHAKE: Bike over to Elevation Burger (2447 N. Harrison Street, Arlington and 442 S. Washington Street, Falls Church) this Friday, flash them your helmet, and they’ll hand you a free shake.

CUPCAKE: Buy a vanilla Sprinkles (3015 M Street NW) cupcake now through the 22nd, and they will donate the proceeds to the Anacostia Watershed Society.

WINE: From 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, learn about and taste environmentally-friendly wines at a free bio-dynamic and organic wine tasting at The Butcher’s Block (1600 King Street, Alexandria).

Events

ZOO: The National Zoo (3001 Connecticut Avenue NW) is throwing an Earth Day Party for the Planet from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. this Friday, where you can make eco-crafts, learn about sustainability efforts at the Zoo, and bring in digital devices (cell phones, computers, batteries) to be properly recycled.

FASHION: Attend an Earth Day Eco-Fashion Show Friday featuring the designs of Auralis at Carbon (2643 Connecticut Ave NW). The ticket price ($25) includes wine and hors d’oeuvres and will go to benefit DC Threads.

MOVIE: The Washington Film Institute presents an Earth Day Film Fest Friday at the Goethe-Institute (812 7th Street NW). Watch The Fourth Revolution at 6:45 p.m. and The Nuclear Comeback at 8 p.m., then stay for a reception. $10 each film, or $15 for both.

ART: Project 4 (1353 U Street NW, 3rd floor) is hosting a Green Works Closing Party and Earth Day Event featuring a panel of speakers, including Carlos Amaya (Chef and Owner of Coppi’s Organic Restaurant), Dennis Chestnut (Executive Director of Groundwork Anacostia River DC), James Hartley (LEED-AP BD+C and Director of Sustainable Design from the M Group Architects + Interior Architects) and others who will talk about “living eco-friendly from lifestyle to community.” 6:30-9:30 p.m.
