WMUC, the University of Maryland’s campus radio station, is facing a budget shortfall after receiving only $7,000 in funds from the Student Government Association, according to The Diamondback.

While the FM station (88.1 WMUC-FM) appears to be safe, the Internet-only WMUC2 station as well as the sports department, which also has its own dedicated stream and covers many of the University’s non-revenue sports teams, is in jeopardy of being shut down.

The station originally requested $27,000 in funding and will submit an appeal to the SGA tonight for an additional $5,000. WMUC, which launched in 1937, is one of the country’s oldest college radio stations and has featured notable alumni such as Connie Chung, Bonnie Bernstein, and the Washington Post’s David Malitz.
