Yes, that’s right: today, the third Thursday in April, is National High Five Day. It’s the tenth annual such celebration of the slapping of palms in jubilation, which was actually started by a group of students at the University of Virginia in 2002. And according to the day’s organizers, the holiday has been officially recognized by San Diego, Fargo, N.D., and Moorhead, MN. (Get on that, D.C. Council.)

“With all the negativity in the world, we just need a day of dorky exuberance,” says co-founder Conor Lastowka. Sounds exactly like what this city needs. (The whole raising money for college scholarships part of the day is pretty solid, too.)
