Photo by mofo.So long, bleachy-smelling drinking water: D.C. Water has announced that the city’s annual switch to a chlorine water disinfectant ends today.
Every year, the Washington Aqueduct switches from the no-odor chloramine to chlorine in order to ensure that the water distribution system that supplies H20 to the District of Columbia, Arlington County and Falls Church is cleaned of all harmful bacteria. This year, the switch took place on March 21.
D.C. Water says that any special precautions that you may have been taking with regards to chlorine-disinfected water — for example, if you have fish — should continue, since it takes a little bit for all traces of the chlorine to exit the system. Residents with specific questions about the switch can call 202-612-3440 (D.C.), 703-228-6570 (Arlington), or 703-248-5071 (Falls Church).
