Back in February, we took note of the Virginia House of Delegates’ passage of bill SB1292, which would allow the Commonwealth’s residents to bring a bottle of wine to restaurants. Bob McDonnell, the state’s governor, signed the bill as expected, and so Virginians will be able to BYOB all they please come July 1.

The bill also allows Virginian restaurants to charge anywhere up to $75 in corkage fees, though it doesn’t require them to do so. (Heads up, restaurateurs: no one in their right mind is going to pay you $75 to bring in their own bottle of wine. Sorry.) The best part of the legislation, though, has to be the portion outlining that restaurants are only permitted to allow the consumption of “lawfully acquired wine by bona fide customers” — take note: all you moochers looking to bring in that batch of bathtub Shiraz are plum out of luck.
