Photo by bradtothebone.Somewhat lost in the Sulaimonmania has been the hiring of Cherita Whiting, who got a plum job in the Department of Parks and Recreation before resigning in April because she failed to disclose a 2001 felony conviction. But the Washington Times’ Jeffrey Anderson has remained on the case! This morning, Anderson reports that Whiting — who was appointed to a job in the Department of Parks and Recreation after serving as a political consultant to Gray during the campaign — was possibly being paid $98,000 per year, and not the $65,000 which had previously been reported to the Council. Anderson notes that, with fringe benefits, the job was costing D.C. taxpayers $123,676.
Both the Mayor’s office and DPR Chief of Staff John Stokes told Anderson that the higher salary was not accurate and that Whiting was making $65,000. And in her defense, Whiting sent an email to Loose Lips columnist Alan Suderman this morning, stating that “THIS IS A BOLD FACE LIE…IF I WAS MAKING THAT MUCH….I WOULDN’T HAVE RESIGNED!” Uh, touche, I guess.
Whiting is slated to also appear at tomorrow’s big Council hearing on Gray administration hiring practices.
