As if having one of the most easily mockable corporate names in the country, being remembered for hosting one of the most miserable concert experiences in the D.C. region’s history and being generally in the middle of nowhere wasn’t enough, Jiffy Lube Live has now said people are no longer allowed to tailgate in its parking lot.

First reported by InsideNova, the venue has said that a ban on tailgating is “it is in the best interest of the fans.” Here’s the official statement from Jiffy Lube Live management:

“The safety of the fans is of paramount importance and we have an ongoing commitment to work with the local police department on all shows to ensure a safe environment for all of our fans. As part of this commitment, it has been determined that it is in the best interest of the fans and their overall experience at the venue to not allow tailgating.”

Here’s how the ban will play out: at this weekend’s WMZQFest, the venue’s parking lots will open at 3 p.m., and then the doors to the festival at 4 — at which point “police will comb the parking lots, filled with more than 25,000 people, and look for tailgating or drinking.” First offenders get warnings, then repeat offenders will be charged with trespassing and escorted out.

It’s kind of a buzzkill, right? (Methinks the venue management didn’t check out the reaction when Dan Snyder started a tailgating war with Redskins fans.) We totally understand that there’s a connection between drinking and driving here that the folks at Jiffy Lube would probably like to distance themselves from — after all, four people have been killed in drunk driving accidents after leaving the venue since 2009 — but there’s no denying that a sizable number of people attend summertime shows in Bristol for the sole purpose of sitting in the parking lot and getting their buzz on. Of course, as David Malitz notes, “There have always been rules against such activity,” though the cops weren’t exactly cracking down, so maybe we all should have known this was coming.

Will the fact that you can’t tailgate be the straw that breaks the camel’s back when it comes to attending shows at Jiffy Lube Live?
