Cutting the vine!

On Friday, Bread for the City — a nonprofit which provides residents of D.C. with comprehensive services like food, clothing, medical care, and legal services — opened up a rooftop garden on top of its new 1525 7th Street NW headquarters.

When we toured the facility back in November 2010, we were told that the new green roof would “serve as the area’s first large-scale rooftop agriculture site, with a vegetable garden that will be tended to by clients and serve as a source for the produce used in cooking classes.” We’re excited to see, based on the above photos, that the garden certainly looks like it’ll be able to help serve that mission. Greg Bloom, a spokesperson for the organization, told us that it’s the “largest rooftop ag[riculture] site in the D.C. metro area,” and that the food grown on it “will be used for demonstrations in our pantry and cooking classes,” as well as “harvested by the clients who are taking a lead in the garden.” BFTC will also host groups like City Blossoms and the National Arboretum for urban agriculture workshops.
