The man accused of resisting arrest during an altercation with transit police which was caught on tape outside the U Street Metro station is now speaking out.
Yesterday, Dwight Harris told NBC’s Tom Sherwood that he “didn’t do anything for them to do this to me.” Harris, formerly homeless, is a “longtime” vendor for Street Sense, the newspaper which provides economic opportunities to homeless individuals around the city. Street Sense reported on the incident yesterday; in that report, Harris accuses the police of using “excessive force,” claims that the arresting officers never read him Miranda rights and shows his swollen and heavily bandaged face. Harris is also reportedly in the process of finding an attorney.
WMATA, officials from which claim that Harris’ reaction to the arrest and incredibly high blood alcohol concentration caused him to “fall out of his wheelchair,” says that the arrest remains under investigation. Citing “some concerns about what he saw in the video,” Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn has launched a “formal review” of the actions taken by the two officers during Harris’ arrest.
